As a country, we love our gardens. But most of us don’t use them for vast chunks of the year. Instead, all that outdoor space goes to waste.
But does that have to be the case? Here, we argue that it doesn’t. We show how you can enjoy your garden and get the most out of it, even during the depths of winter or when the cold weather arrives.
Add A Breakfast Nook
You’ve probably heard of reading nooks, spaces you can go in your home to curl up with a good book. But now you can add breakfast nooks to your outdoor areas which function similarly. These provide a warm space for you to eat eggs and drink hot coffee in your garden, without exposing yourself to the elements.
Most of these nooks have roofs and lamps to keep you warm. You can also base them around an outdoor fire if it is safe to do so.
Build A Covered Patio
Another similar option is to build a covered patio. These give you the feeling of being outdoors but also protect you from the elements and stop you from getting cold.
Covered patios are year-round spaces. You could add a pergola, roof sections, and even curtains to retain more warmth at night.
Some people use heated rocks to keep covered patios warm. These infuse the space with additional warmth throughout the day, making the space feel cosier.
Add A Conservatory
Another approach is to get a local conservatory company to construct a bespoke space in your garden that you can use year-round. The great thing about conservatories is that they keep you warm without impeding views of your garden. You can look out onto your lawn and grass without having to wrap yourself in ten coats.
Conservatories are also more permanent structures than covered patios or breakfast nooks. They add value to your home and make the entire space look and feel cosy. Plus, you can fit them out just like you would any other interior room with plush seating, coffee tables, pot plants, and rugs.
Get Your Fire Pit Roaring
You can also try getting out into your garden more by firing up the fire pit and getting it roaring. These can put out vast quantities of heat, which is great for spending time solo or with friends.
Make the fire pit the centrepiece of your sitting area. Connect it to the gas mains and switch on the spigot to heat the area. Even better, use it at night and enjoy the flickering flames.
Add A Greenhouse
If you like working in your garden, you might also want to add a greenhouse to the space. These are naturally warm throughout the year, particularly on sunny days, staving off frostbite.
Fit A Hammock
Finally, you might want to consider fitting a hammock in the shade for when the weather gets too hot for gardening. Hammocks are perfect for lounging around on a lazy afternoon after a long week in the office.
