What You Can Do to Add a Victorian Touch to Your Modern Home

What You Can Do to Add a Victorian Touch to Your Modern Home

Posted on 08/29/202404/19/2025 by Lucinda Fowkes

Needless to say, there’s nothing wrong with modernising your home if you feel like it’s outdated, but if your home is too modern, it has a way of looking off, but at the same time, it’s the same if it’s too outdated too. Now, bringing a Victorian touch into your modern home isn’t about turning your space into a time capsule; it’s about adding a bit of that old-world charm that makes everything feel a little more special.

Victorian interior design is all about the details—the kind that make you stop and appreciate the craftsmanship, the elegance, and the sheer character of a room. If your modern home is feeling a bit too sleek and minimal, then maybe it’s time to consider introducing some Victorian elements that can add warmth, personality, and a sense of history that’s hard to beat. But where exactly do you get started with this?

Go Big on the Ornate Architectural Details

Victorian design loves detail, and that’s where the magic happens. So, just go ahead and think about adding decorative moulding to your walls or ceilings. Crown moulding, chair rails, and wainscoting can instantly elevate the look of any room, giving it that refined Victorian feel. Plus, if you follow any interior designers online, you’re going to see that they’re always raving about these because they’re fairly timeless. Basically, the whole key is to make it timeless. But if you’re feeling adventurous, consider installing a ceiling medallion—it’s the perfect way to highlight a chandelier and make a statement.

Luxurious Fabrics and Rich Textures

One of the easiest ways to add a Victorian touch to your home is through fabrics. Depending on the fabric itself, it can help make the space feel modern yet a nod to vintage. Victorians loved their rich, luxurious textiles—think velvet, brocade, and damask.

So, you might want to consider using these materials as drapes, upholstering them on a chair, or even on a headboard for your bedroom. Velvet furniture is pretty common, and you’ll find more modern couches and armchairs that have velvet on it, so even something like this can bring that hint of the Victorian Era into your modern home.

Get Yourself a Fireplace

If you’ve ever been inside a truly authentic Victorian home, then you might already be aware that nearly every room has a fireplace. But you also need to keep in mind that a fireplace is the heart of a Victorian room. So, if your home is blessed with one, give it the attention it deserves. But of course, even if you don’t have one, you can always look into getting some fireplaces and surrounds for your home.

Actually, they’re far easier to get then you might think (and pretty affordable too). But with that all said, these are the focal point usually, and they often have intricate tiles, ornate details on the mantel, or even a decorate fireplace screen.

But even with modern mantles, you can still add those Victorian touches, such as with a cast iron cover (super common back then) or, again, having some tiles. So, this is the focal point, and you shouldn’t go boring or generic with it!
